Saint Thecla was a young, unmarried girl from a noble family who lived in Iconomium, near Antioch, in the region of Galatia in modern Turkey. She lived during the period following the crucifixion of Jesus when Paul the Apostle was spreading the Christian faith. On his first ministry journey Paul travelled to Iconomium where he gave his sermons in the house of Onesiphorus. Thecla heard the preaching of Saint Paul and converted to Christianity. Shew was arrested for her faith and sentenced to death in the arena. The legend states that she was exposed to the lions in the amphitheatre at Antioch, but these refused to touch her. The Antiochian authorities released her and Thecla joined Saint Paul on his missionary journeys.
