The patron saint of Guam and the Marianas Islands is Santa Marian Kamalen, or Our Lady of Camarin. On October 14th, 1965, the vicariate apostolic was raised to a diocese. The first visit by the Roman Catholic Pope was in 1981. Guam sent a delegation of young people for the first time to World Youth Day 2008 when it was held in Sydney, Australia.
