While Bishop of Philadelphia, Neumann founded the first Catholic diocesan school system in the United States. His surname is properly pronounced "Noi-mahn" as opposed to "New-man". Neumann was beatified by Pope Paul VI during the Second Vatican Council on October 13, 1963. He was canonized by Pope Paul VI on June 19, 1977. His feast day is January 5. Following his canonization, the National Shrine of St. John Neumann was constructed at the Parish of St. Peter the Apostle, which is located at the corner of 5th Street and Girard Avenue in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia. The remains of St. John Neumann rest under the main altar of the shrine within a glass-enclosed cavity.
